I got to know about System of a Down when I read that they are one of the inspirations for Avril Lavigne. Thereafter I discovered that they are known for their powerful and thought-provoking lyrics, often addressing political and social issues. While I am not a fan of their genre of music, still I appreciate some aspects of commentary in their lyrics. Here are some of their most impactful lines:
-
"B.Y.O.B." (Bring Your Own Bombs):
- "They say, 'Bring your own bombs.' If you want to leave, you better pack your soul." This line highlights the absurdity and hypocrisy of war, where individuals are expected to participate in violence while their own souls are at stake.
-
"Chop Suey!":
- "This cocaine makes me feel like I'm the man, makes me forget that I have a plan." This line criticizes the societal obsession with material possessions and instant gratification, which can lead to self-destruction and a loss of purpose.
-
"Toxicity":
- "I'm drowning in the ocean of your lies, you're poisoning the wells of my demise." This line speaks to the destructive nature of toxic relationships and the emotional damage they can cause.
-
"P.L.U.C.K.":
- "A whole race, genocide / Taken away all of our pride." This line is a powerful indictment of the Armenian Genocide and other acts of mass violence throughout history.
-
"Aerials":
- "Letting the melody, the symphony of destruction, consume my insides." This line captures the feeling of being overwhelmed by the chaos and violence of the world.
Their music is known for its raw emotion, social commentary and sometimes they do resonate with me on a deep level.
